mission statement"I have to admit that until my recent tour and in-depth interview with the JCC's staff, I never fully knew just how much this agency has to offer. In fact, I walked away thinking that the JCC is truly a one-stop shop for families in need of time together."

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Ron (age 71) and Ethel Hirshen (age 69)

Ron is the unofficial funny man in the Fitness Center. He’s always ready with a humorous remark. Ron jokes about all the calories he and Ethel burn while talking to everyone in the Fitness Center. The Hirshens first joined the JCC back in 1991 because of the nice members, friendly staff, good times and broad selection of cardio and strength training machines. Over the years, not much has changed except Ron has more muscle tone and many more members he calls “friends”. They both maintain a consistent fitness regimen of treadmill, weights and yoga classes. They both try their best to keep to a healthy diet of lean meats and veggies but sometimes his signature bagel with cream cheese gets in the way! They also participate in other joint activities such as racquetball and swimming after they leave the JCC. After all they can stay as long as they want to play on land or in the pool as retirees. It looks like they have the last laugh!

      STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE

      Sunday, February 13, 2011, 8:35 AM

In many ways, "Matt" is a typical, well-adjusted, happy 10-year-old. He loves pizza and French fries; his favorite TV show is "Sponge Bob;" he enjoys playing soccer and his favorite time of the year is summer, during which he could play outdoors and relax.

Matt, though, is different. He's described as having Asperger Syndrome. Typically, people with Asperger Syndrome have social and communicative impairments that make it more challenging for them to function in general society.
