General
Information |
Whether you want to
introduce your child or yourself to the joys of playing an
instrument or developing vocal talent, or you want to take
your skills to a higher level, the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music
Institute has the depth and range of instruction you are
seeking.
The Music Institute has been a powerful stimulus to music on
Staten Island since its inception. Its faculty and students
are active participants in the musical life of the community
and throughout New York City. The faculty consists of
professional musicians with extensive teaching and
performing experience and students learn in a
non-competitive atmosphere. The Music Institute is a
non-profit and non-sectarian music school. It is the only
member school of the National Guild of Community Schools of
the Arts on Staten Island.. |

History
Music instruction at the Staten Island JCC began in the late
1950's in affiliation with the Bronx House School of Music.
In 1970 the Music Institute of the JCC was formed by
co-directors Bertha R. Mandel and Dorothy D. Kuhn as an
autonomous music school. The school changed to its current
name, Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute, in 1994.

Scholarship
Program
A substantial scholarship program enables many students to
receive financial help towards their musical studies at the
Music Institute. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of
need and merit. Auditions are held in the late spring and
during summer recess. Students entering grades 6 -12 who
have had some previous training on their instrument are
eligible to audition for a scholarship. Younger students of
exceptional ability are also eligible. They should have some
previous training and a teacher's recommendation. The
Foundation of the Music Institute of the JCC was established
in 1978 to insure the continuity of the scholarship program.
