AUTISTIC SPORTS/RECREATION PROGRAMMING

Learning and participating in athletic skills is a good exercise that many ASD children do not get as they are often not part of an organized team. Sports/Rec programs will provide a safe environment that will encourage exercise, socialization and fun for ASD children. It has been proven that team sports help some children with autism towards increasing their patience, reduce temper tantrums, and enhance social skills, physical coordination, as well as their focus and attention.

  • Yoga/Movement

A way for children to learn the parts of their bodies, to follow instructions, work alongside their classmates and to enjoy moving their bodies. Yoga offers a structured, focused activity
that doesn’t have a judgmental right/wrong component. The students will always see themselves as successful and will find their favorite positions.
Registration: Sunday, April 15, 10am 12PE133S

  • Swimming

All players need to work on individual skills as well as team-building skills. There will be timed stations where the children will work on their attention and focus, independent transitions
to all stations, and basic skills, such as chest pass, bounce pass and defensive stance. We will use relay games to encourage teambuilding skills. We will incorporate skills such as turn-taking, keeping hands to self, cooperative play, communicating appropriately with peers, staying on task, exhibiting good sportsmanship, putting forth best effort, following teacher’s verbal/ visual directions.

Kihon covers the training of various stances, kicks, blocks, strikes and punches. Kata are the traditional predetermined forms or patterns of karate. Karate is a method of keeping fit and healthy; it develops balance, co-ordination, strength and flexibility.
