The classical form Moliere was referring to is opera. A synthesis of music and drama, opera has held audiences enthralled since it was first developed in late 16th century Italy. The world’s first public opera house, opened in Venice in 1637, presented the later works of Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), the first real master of opera. Meanwhile in France and England, listeners heard operas by other Baroque opera masters, including Jean-Baptiste Lully, Henry Purcell, and George Frederic Handel. Film and opera director Franco Zeffirelli once said, “I have always believed that opera is a planet where the muses work together, join hands, and celebrate all the arts.” Stay tuned for next week's trivia challenge! - Virtual Instrumental Lessons As you have heard, our virtual lessons have been extended through the summer months! What major symphonic work was born during the early days of the terrible 1941-1944 German siege of Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia, and became a wartime symbol of Allied resistance to Nazi Germany? The Seventh Symphony (Leningrad) by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Born in St. Petersburg before the Communist revolution, Shostakovich was in the city of his birth (which Soviets had renamed Leningrad) when German armed forces began their brutal 900-day siege, which choked off access to Leningrad so successfully that more than 600,000 of its residents and defenders starved to death before it was over. Acting as a firefighter after German shells began to rain down, Shostakovich spent some of his off-duty hours beginning work on the Seventh Symphony; he finished it in late December 1941, after escaping from the beleaguered city. Dedicated to “the ordinary Soviet citizens who have become the heroes of the present war,” this seventy-three-minute musical description of the horrors of the siege premiered in Moscow on March 1, 1942, was first performed in London that June, and debuted in the United States in July. - Compose Your Own Music Are you the next great composer? In 1908, a Yiddish newspaper summoned the Jewish immigrant women of New York's Lower East Side to unite—not to start a revolution but rather to observe the Sabbath. The Shabes Zhurnal, an effort led by Jewish rabbis and communal leaders, was chagrined at the blows immigration and adaptation had imposed on Jewish families and homed in on Jewish women as potential saviors. This illustrated talk, which draws on cookbooks, memoirs, and advice columns, looks at the revolution of immigration and Americanization and how immigrant women creatively grappled with adaptation. This multi-stringed and multi-pedaled instrument has a connection with 20th century American comedy. What instrument is it and what comedian famously played it? The harp became associated with American comedy when it was played Harpo Marx. Born Adolph Marx, he later changed his name to Arthur and is best known by his stage name, Harpo. While Harpo was the only non-speaking member of the Marx Brothers comedy team, his harp-playing became an iconic sound in the many films they made together. Watch Harpo play “Guardian Angels,” an original composition, here. Harps were used in orchestras that performed the first Italian operas. They were later ignored or used sparingly by such musical giants as Bach and Handel. Later, they were employed to great effect by such Romantic–era composers as Berlioz, List, and Wagner as well as Debussy and others of his Impressionist school. With as many as forty-seven strings and seven pedals, the modern orchestral harp can be a challenge to keep in proper celestial voice, something that might have prompted the testy comment attributed to Igor Stravinsky: “Harpists spend 90 percent of their lives tuning their harps and 10 percent playing out of tune.” - A Special Performance of Baby Beluga The New York Philharmonic Orchestra presents Young People's Concerts Play! WELLNESS Five Ways to Quiet Stress Try out these 5 grounding techniques to reduce stress! 1.) Diaphragmatic breathing. Lie down with one hand on your chest and the other on your stomach. As you inhale, feel your belly press into your bottom hand. As you exhale, feel your belly soften and fall. 2.) Intentional breathing. Be conscious of your breathing, feeling the coolness of the air as it enters your nostrils and the warmth as it exits. 3.) Earthing. Take your shoes off and notice the feeling of your feet against the floor. 4.) Find your feet. While this technique can be done with shoes on, it is similar to earthing in that it encourages us to take a moment and notice the physical sensations of our feet. 5.) Body scan. Find a comfortable position lying down. Start at your toes and work up to the crown of your head, or go in the opposite direction, and slowly "notice what there is to notice in your physical body." Observe any tension, temperature, numbness, or other sensations. Read more about grounding techniques here. - At-Home Workouts Check out this link for a variety of workouts you can do from the comfort of your own home! - Ongoing Wellness Classes We have several virtual wellness classes throughout the week! Join us on Zoom Zoom Meeting ID: 579 496 5827 MUSIC Music Trivia Challenge One of this seminal American composer’s works involved slicing vegetables, putting them into a blender, and drinking the resulting juice. Who was he, and what was his vegetable composition? John Cage (1912-1992) used vegetables and a blender in his composition 0’0". A native of Los Angeles, Cage quit college to travel and study music and art. He studied with, among others, Henry Cowell and Arnold Schoenberg (who taught him without charge after Cage pledged to devote his life to music) and begun composing in the early 1930s. A decade later, his works for percussion and "prepared piano" (with tones altered by objects placed among its strings) gained Cage recognition from the National Institute of Arts and Letters for having "extended the boundaries of musical art." In his more ambitious later works—which might employ random ambient noise or music derived from a cactus—Cage ever sought to blur the line between life and art, and his impact on his century was enormous. He once said, "Everything (one does) is music and everywhere is the best seat." I Want You To Know We're Still Here with Esther Safron Foer Thursday, July 9, 8pm I Want You to Know We’re Still Here is a beautifully written account of a relentless journey to the genealogical — indeed geographic — core of family trauma to uncover mysteries buried in the mass graves of an old-world shtetl. The memoir concludes with a new-world birth — a grandson who carries Foer family history in his name and soul — symbolizing the promise of the next generation. In uncovering the past, Foer demonstrates how memory can, therapeutically, fill an aching absence. Watch here. Every year, the JCC serves over 6,000 people in crisis. One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, this Founding Father is also widely acknowledged as the first successful poet-composer of the United States of America. Who was he? He was Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791)! In addition to his multiple roles in the founding and early government of the United States, Hopkinson was a lawyer, inventor, artist, essayist, scholar, graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s first class (1757)—and an organist, psalmist, and harpsichordist. Hopkinson is also credited as America’s first poet-composer, and his song “My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free” (1759) is regarded as the earliest surviving American secular composition. Hopkinson celebrated the crucial alliance between France and United States by composing what musicologist Oscar Sonneck termed a “dramatic allegorical cantata,” “The Temple of Minerva” (1781). He also directed the cantata’s premiere performance before an audience that included George Washington and other notables. In 1788, Hopkinson published the musical volume Seven Songs and wrote in its dedication, “I cannot, I believe, be refused the Credit of being the first Native of the United States who has produced a Musical Composition.” - A Tribute to the American Spirit Saturday, July 4, 4pm Join the U.S. Air Force Band, Washington Performing Arts and special guest artists Joshua Bell, Soloman Howard, and Larisa Martinez for a musical tribute to the American Spirit in honor of the 4th of July! Both parents are self-employed and unable to work due to the pandemic. They receive SNAP food benefits, but it isn't enough to cover all of their food bills. We were able to get them supplemental food from the JCC Kosher Food Pantry and referred them to a financial counselor for help with their debt.
