An orchestra conductor and self-taught composer, he wrote his first symphony at age sixteen and later founded Mexico’s Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional. Who was he? Carlos Chavez (1899-1978). Born near Mexico City, Chavez learned piano from his brother and taught himself composition by analyzing the European masters and creating piano arrangements of Mexican songs. By age sixteen he had written his first symphony; at age twenty-two he composed the Aztec-based ballet El fuego nuevo. Chavez was a musical citizen of the world, traveling, studying, and bringing to his country the work of contemporaries such as Igor Stravinsky and Erik Satie while helping to shape, with fellow artists such as Diego Rivera, a nationalist and progressive public art. After organizing the Orquesta Sinfonica in 1928, he served as its principal conductor until 1949, commissioning and performing many modern works. Chavez’s own compositions—including seven symphonies, ballets, the Soli (1933-1966) for small wind groups, and the popular Toccata for percussion (1942)—show the breadth of modern and ancient influences on his work as well as his talents as a colorist and rhythmist. - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here! What was the ballet? The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps). When this ballet premiered at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees in Paris on May 29, 1913, the audience met the discomfiting story of pagan sacrifice—told via Vaslav Nijinsky’s strange choreography and Igor Stravinsky’s innovative music—with hisses and catcalls. Though jarring to early 20th century musical sensibilities, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring has since been established as one of the century’s musical masterworks, a reflection of the composer’s belief that “we have a duty to music, namely to invent it.” - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here! - Music Trivia Challenge This week's trivia challenge asked... In the mid-twentieth century, renowned classical musician E. Power Biggs played weekly recitals that were broadcast on the radio. What instrument did he play, and what Baroque composer did he especially honor each year? A celebrated organist, E. Power Biggs (1906-1977) honored Johann Sebastian Bach by playing at the annual Bethlehem Bach Festival in Pennsylvania. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Biggs began his performing career by giving recitals in English cathedrals. After emigrating to the United States in 1930, he served as organist of Christ Church Cambridge and later as music director of Harvard Church. At the same time, he made tours of Europe while scouring Continental churches for instruments similar to those used by the Baroque masters. (Biggs forever balked at playing electronic organs, whose tone he considered but a coarse approximation of the “classic” organ sound.) He became widely known in the 1940s and 1950s for weekly recitals that were broadcast on CBS radio. His many recordings include selections of the work of African American composer Scott Joplin, which Biggs played on the pedal harpsichord, a harpsichord with an organ–type pedal board. - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here! - Music Trivia Challenge Tuesday's J at Home asked...This leader of a jazz orchestra commissioned, and in 1924 debuted, a composition from a fellow American that is now a standard on a classical playlist. Who was the orchestra leader, what was the composition, and who was the composer? In 1924, the orchestra led by “King of Jazz” Paul Whiteman (1890-1967) premiered “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin (1898-1937). When 25 year old George Gershwin sat down at the piano on the stage at New York City’s Aeolian Hall on February 12, 1924, to play his new Whiteman-commissioned rhapsody, he was a Tin Pan Alley and Broadway composer of limited renown. “Rhapsody in Blue” made him famous. Without the help of the JCC, many people would not have food, legal services, health insurance, mental health services, and other critical services. We want to be able to continue to provide these services to anyone who needs them, but we need your help. Donate to our Families in Need campaign here. |
