In 1926, this man established a foundation that has since provided support to, and sponsored competitions promoting the skills of, gifted young American musicians. Who was he? Walter W. Naumburg (American, 1867-1959). A banker and amateur cellist, Naumburg grew up surrounded by music: his parents hosted weekly chamber music evenings in their home and otherwise supported the musical arts. In the 1920s, Naumburg met a gifted young singer desperate to have her New York City debut but without funds to buy a dress or hire a hall. “She had to go from one friend to another,” he later recalled, “and collect enough money to pay for a recital.” Her predicament moved him to establish the Walter W. Naumburg Foundation, which continues to sponsor competitions and awards in solo and chamber music performance, composer recordings, and conducting. - Instrumental Lessons In addition to our ongoing virtual music lessons, we are also excited to begin offering outdoor in-person music lessons! All lessons will adhere to government guidelines and regulations. We will take all the necessary precautions to ensure our students' and faculty members' safety. We miss our students and hope this will be a good alternative until we are permitted to welcome you back into our building again! Sign up for lessons here!
