ARTS AND CULTURE Building Peace and Dialogue between Jews and Muslims with Dr. Mehnaz Afridi Thursday, November 4, 7pm Bernikow JCC Social Hall Join us for a lecture by Dr. Mehnaz Afridi focusing on building peace between Jews and Muslims. Dr. Afridi will discuss the need for empathy in the Muslim community on the topic of the Holocaust, and the “racialization” of Jews and Muslims. She will also talk about the implications of colonialism and how it has fostered animosity between these groups. Staten Island Witness Theater Witness Theater is seeking student participants for its new program on Staten Island! The program brings together a small group of Holocaust survivors and teens in a unique, supported, story-sharing process, which culminates in a theatrical performance based on the survivors’ stories, tenderly shared with the public by the students and survivors together. This year’s program will be a hybrid model, with some sessions in person and some on Zoom. Please note: For the safety of all involved, all participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. As direct memory of the Holocaust fades, Jews around the world are wondering whether the patterns of past centuries are returning, in both the Old and New Worlds, where Jews experience more hate crimes than any other group. Join Rabbi Mendy Katzman for Outsmarting Antisemitism, a 4-week course that takes this dark subject on squarely, with a sense of unabashed optimism, profound faith, and a distinctly Jewish approach. After coauthoring an autobiography of her Holocaust-survivor husband, she encouraged her mother to document her own story. Maya subsequently conducted wide-ranging research to fill out her mother’s story. The Nazis Knew My Name is the result.
