Check out these great upcoming events! - Protect Yourself this Flu Season: Free Flu Shots The JCC is offering multiple opportunities to get a free flu shot, in partnership with the Office of the Borough President of Staten Island and CVS Pharmacy. Please note certain dates require pre-registration. Saturday, October 24, 11am-2pm Richmond Terrace Community Center, 71 Jersey Street Tuesday, October 27 & Thursday, October 29, 10am-4pm (10am-12pm open to seniors only) Bernikow JCC Social Hall, 1466 Manor Road For these flu shots, an appointment must be made. Reserve your slot here. Friday, October 30, 11am-2pm Gerard Carter Community Center, 230 Broad Street Registration is required. Please email Mogunleye@sijcc.com to reserve your spot. - TOMORROW: Craft in Character, 4pm Join us for a not-so-spooky virtual celebration for kids & families! All proceeds will benefit Sunrise Day Camp-Staten Island, a free camp for children with cancer and their siblings. The event will include face-painting and crafting demonstrations! Tickets are $10 per household and can be purchased here. Zoom link will be sent 24 hours prior to the event. For the craft, you will need glue/tape, paper plates, scissors, colorful paper/magazine paper, and anything fun & creative such as google eyes, glitter, ribbon. We also recommend purchasing a face painting kit (with black, white, red, yellow, green, blue, pink, & purple paints) so that you can participate from home! - SAJE Presents... Book Talk with Paul Alster Thursday, October 22, 2pm Civil war is drawing closer. A fierce political battle engulfs a once-in-a-lifetime referendum. Is a new era about to begin? IN THE NEWS Cafe Europa Lobbies Facebook to Block Anti-Semitism Members of our Cafe Europa club for Holocaust survivors were part of a successful effort to lobby Facebook to address anti-Semitism. Facebook recently announced its new policy to remove and block Holocaust denial on their platform. You can read the full statement by Facebook here. We are proud of our Cafe Europa participants for their courage and dedication to sharing their stories to educate younger generations about their experiences during the Holocaust. - Fall Fun with Day Hab Participants from our Day Hab program went pumpkin picking together last week! MUSIC Music Institute Re-Opening for In-Person Lessons The Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute has officially re-opened for individual, in-person instrumental lessons! Lessons will take place on weekdays, Monday through Friday, between 3pm-7pm. Spaces are limited, so make sure to register early. Sign up here! All lessons will follow CDC guidelines. Gary Negbaur is a Harvard and Berklee College of Music-educated pianist, singer, and composer who has performed and taught around the world. He has also composed music for theater, TV, and film. This class explores traditional positions of alignment for contemporary technique in order to strengthen and protect our bodies while dancing. We then employ this technique in slow choreography with opportunities for improvisation. A focus is also placed on musicality and timing. Adults of all ages welcome. Zoom link follows your registration. - Harmony Club The Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute is accepting highly motivated music students in grades 9-12 to participate in a FREE comprehensive course of study. “Harmony Club” students receive private lessons and ensemble classes throughout the 2020-21 school year. In addition, students participate in master classes, and solo and group recitals. Students accepted to the program are required to fully participate in lessons and workshops and to represent the program through public performances. KIDS AND FAMILIES The Five Senses of Fall This article from the Port Discovery Children's Museum offers some ideas for spending the perfect fall day by exploring autumn with the five senses! - Spaghetti Marshmallow Building Contest Saturday, December 5, 9am at Monsignor Farrell HS Put your architectural skills to the test by entering the Staten Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' Fall 2020 Spaghetti-Marshmallow Building Contest. This wonderful event is open to children from grades 2 through 8. Contestants will build a structure using spaghetti and marshmallows. You're encouraged to have fun, be creative, experiment with your materials, and learn something along the way!
