Check out these great upcoming events! - Tree of Life Memorial Ceremony Today marks the two year anniversary of the tragic shooting at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, an Anti-Semitic attack that took the lives of eleven people and wounded six. On this somber day, we join with people from across the nation and globe for the Tree of Life Virtual Memorial. You can join the Virtual Memorial tonight at 7pm here. We are heartbroken over those we lost and will never forget their memories. At our JCC, we continue to honor them by fighting against Anti-Semitism and hate of any kind. - Protect Yourself this Flu Season: Free Flu Shots The JCC is offering multiple opportunities to get a free flu shot, in partnership with the Office of the Borough President of Staten Island and CVS Pharmacy. Please note certain dates require pre-registration. Tuesday, October 27 & Thursday, October 29, 10am-4pm (10am-12pm open to seniors only) Bernikow JCC Social Hall, 1466 Manor Road For these flu shots, an appointment must be made. American Jewish Women in Politics, 12:30pm Join Amy Posner, Executive Director of Hillel at CSI for a lecture on American Jewish Women in Politics! Tickets are $5 and can be purchased here. Registered participants will also receive a recording of the lecture following the event. - Sing Your Way Home Wednesday, October 28 at 11am Join us for our introductory session of "Sing Your Way Home," a new music class for families with young children. Emily, an award-winning children's music performer will fill your hearts with music! Use your drums, maracas, or simply pots and pans to participate! We are excited to have Gary Negbaur with us for a discussion of the foundation of American music and a special performance. Gary Negbaur is a Harvard and Berklee College of Music-educated pianist, singer, and composer who has performed and taught around the world. He has also composed music for theater, TV, and film. Register here. - SAJE Presents...Memories of a Child Holocaust Survivor in Terezin Wednesday, November 18, 7pm The Dr. Esther Grushkin Seminars for Adult Jewish Education (SAJE) is proud to partner with the Wagner College Holocaust Center to present a conversation with Holocaust survivor, Dr. Inge Auerbacher. Inge grew up in Kippenheim Germany. In August 1942, she was deported to Terezin with her parents and beloved doll Marlene. Of the 15,000 children sent there, only 100 survived. A chemist by profession, Inge has spoken in countries around the world. She has a special relationship with Staten Island's own P.S. 22 choir, which has sung two of her poems, including at the U.N. She is the author of 6 books, including I am a Star: Child of the Holocaust. She was awarded the Ellis Island Medal of Honor. MUSIC Music Institute Open for In-Person Lessons The Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute has officially re-opened for individual, in-person instrumental lessons! This class explores traditional positions of alignment for contemporary technique in order to strengthen and protect our bodies while dancing. We then employ this technique in slow choreography with opportunities for improvisation. A focus is also placed on musicality and timing. Adults of all ages welcome. Zoom link follows your registration. - Harmony Club The Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute is accepting highly motivated music students in grades 9-12 to participate in a FREE comprehensive course of study. “Harmony Club” students receive private lessons and ensemble classes throughout the 2020-21 school year. In addition, students participate in master classes, and solo and group recitals. Students accepted to the program are required to fully participate in lessons and workshops and to represent the program through public performances. This program is made possible through a grant from UJA-Federation of New York. - Compelling Quintets The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center has put together a concert using archival recordings! Purchase tickets here. - Spaghetti Marshmallow Building Contest Saturday, December 5, 9am at Monsignor Farrell HS Put your architectural skills to the test by entering the Staten Island Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' Fall 2020 Spaghetti-Marshmallow Building Contest. This wonderful event is open to children from grades 2 through 8. Contestants will build a structure using spaghetti and marshmallows. You're encouraged to have fun, be creative, experiment with your materials, and learn something along the way! A Conversation with LGBTQ+ People of Color Thursday, October 29, 2:30pm Join the Wagner College Center for Intercultural Advancement, the College of Staten Island LGBTQ Resource Center, and Pride Center of Staten Island for a conversation with LGBTQ+ People of Color about forming their identity within the LGBTQ+ community. This panel discussion will focus on the experiences of LGBTQ+ people of color, their coming out process, acceptance in the LGBTQ+ community, and how they operate in the world. The goal of this panel discussion is to create a safe space through which we can explore topics of identity and bring together LGBTQ+ POC and their allies on campus. Register for the meeting here. Watch here. - Every year, the JCC serves over 6,000 people in crisis. This year, that number will grow as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19. Without the help of the JCC, many people would not have food, legal services, health insurance, mental health services, and other critical services.
