Who was the leading composer of the so-called Viennese School? Arnold Schoenberg (American, b. Austria, 1874-1951). Best known for his radical reconfiguring of tonal relationships (particularly development of the twelve- tone system), Schoenberg was one of the most influential figures in all of modern music. Born in Vienna, he began his musical career playing cello and violin and composing chamber music while paying his bills by orchestrating and conducting theatrical music. The influence of Richard Wagner is evident in his earlier works, particularly the string sextet Verklarte Nacht (Transfigured Night) and epic Gurre-Lieder (Song of Gurre). These were followed by more experimental works, including Five Piano Pieces, op. 23, and Serenade, op.24. Schoenberg’s increasingly progressive ideas influenced many younger composers, most notably Alban Berg and Anton Webern, who are grouped with him as members of the “Second Viennese School.” - Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center: Anthony McGill Check out the latest installment in the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center's Front Row Artist Series, featuring clarinetist Anthony McGill.
