Check out these great upcoming events! - TODAY: Protect Yourself this Flu Season: Free Flu Shots, 10am-3pm The JCC is offering free flu shots, in partnership with the Office of the Borough President of Staten Island and CVS Pharmacy. Please note certain dates require pre-registration. Gerard Carter Community Center, 230 Broad Street Flu shots will be administered by CVS Pharmacy and Staten Island University Hospital. Masks required. Safety measures will be followed. In addition to flu shots, there will also be mask & hand sanitizer giveaways and a Visa gift card raffle. Registration is required. Koufax, who famously chose not to start Game 1 of the 1965 World Series for the Dodgers because it fell on Yom Kippur, has been an inspiration to so many and we can't wait to hear about his story. Register here. - Ballet Imagination: Introduction to Contemporary Dance Tuesday, November 24, 4:30pm Introduce your child to dance with this class on traditional and contemporary techniques designed to build strength and provide a foundation in dance, musicality, and timing. This creative, active, and educational class combines choreographed movement with fun and improvisation. Register here. - Goodnight with Classical Music Demo Session: Tuesday, November 24, 8pm Join us for a special virtual storytime series, where we will use classical music & art to journey to the magical worlds of our favorite stories! IN THE NEWS Staten Island Power 100: Orit Lender We are so proud of our CEO, Orit Lender, for making City and State Magazine's Staten Island Power 100 this year! Orit has been an important part of the JCC for nearly 20 years and we know that she is going to continue to do great things for our community in the future! Learn more about Care2Share here. - “Team Marco” Virtual Celebration Our friends at Boro Five will be celebrating their new family movie, “Team Marco,” digitally this Saturday at 6:30pm. The virtual celebration will include interviews with the cast, a Q&A, and an opportunity to buy or rent the movie. Part of the filming of the movie took place at the JCC, and our agency is featured throughout the film. We can’t wait to see it! Through our Connect to Recovery program, the JCC is here to connect you to free emergency services, either through JCC programs or referrals to partner agencies. We offer free, remote help with questions about accessing food stamps, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD), public assistance, health insurance, Medicaid, and Medicare! A Virtual Tour of the Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum Tuesday, December 15, 7pm Join Dan Glassman for a virtual tour of the Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum. Opened in 2005, the museum is an essential hub for Holocaust education in the region. Its centerpiece is an abandoned—now restored—synagogue originally built in 1876. The event is free, but we welcome any donations that will help us plan future programs, including enriching Arts & Culture lectures and Holocaust education events like this one. Jewish Film Series with Dr. Julia Wagner Sundays, January 3 - February 7, 12pm Over the summer, we enjoyed an amazing lecture series on the Jewish American Princess stereotype in movies with film scholar Dr. Julia Wagner. This time, Dr. Wagner is back for a 5-part Jewish film series, where she'll explore representations of the Jewish experience on screen from early silent films to today, from Hollywood to Israel. MUSIC Music Institute Open for In-Person Lessons The Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute has officially re-opened for individual, in-person instrumental lessons! Lessons will take place on weekdays, Monday through Friday, between 3pm-7pm. Spaces are limited, so make sure to register early. Sign up here! All lessons will follow CDC guidelines. Partial scholarships are open to students entering grades 5-12 who have some prior training on their instrument. Our Harmony Club scholarship program is open to highly motivated students in grades 9-12. “Harmony Club” students will take free private lessons and ensemble classes. Students will also participate in master classes, and solo and group recitals. This program is made possible through a grant from UJA-Federation of New York. KIDS AND FAMILIES Thanksgiving Wreath Tutorial Check out this tutorial, which will teach you how to make a festive Thanksgiving wreath with paper leaves. On each leaf, kids will write something they are thankful for. This is a great way to learn about giving thanks! SOCIAL SERVICES COVID-19 Bereavement Support Group New group forming soon UJA-Federation of New York’s Partners in Caring presents a virtual Covid-19 bereavement support group for family caregivers. Participants will chat virtually with speech-language pathology graduate students and NYS licensed supervisors and participate in in fun memory-related activities! With such an increase in need for food assistance, we also need additional volunteers to help us feed local families. Volunteers can help with various jobs including distribution to families, stocking shelves, packing food packages, and more. Getting Started: A Writing Workshop Exclusively for Descendants of Holocaust Survivors Sunday, November 22, 2pm The Virtual JCC invites descendants of Holocaust survivors to an informative workshop that explores how to approach and shape your family’s Holocaust narrative. This online program will help you develop a concise written history by providing thoughtful prompts and the tools necessary to begin this journey. Learn more and register here. Displaced Jews at the End of the Second World War Monday, November 23, 8pm David Nasaw explores what happened to the one million people, including between 200,000 and 250,000 Jews, who were left behind in Germany at the end of the war, who either could not go home or had no homes to go to. These last million would spend the next three to five years in displaced persons camps as the international community debated over their fate. Watch here.
