IN THE NEWS Thanksgiving Pie Deliveries The JCC's Family Solutions to Memory Loss features programs and support for people with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias, along with their caregivers. Since many of our caregivers and care-receivers are experiencing social isolation and have not seen our JCC staff since March, our Caregiver Support Center staff drove to their homes last week and safely delivered fresh apple and blueberry pies and some masks for Thanksgiving. We are grateful to Shop Rite and Stop & Shop for donating the delicious pies and helping us spread some joy for Thanksgiving! - Staten Island: Stay Strong, Stay Safe With the holidays approaching and positive cases increasing across the island, it's more important than ever that we all do our part to stay safe and strong. - CLLD Grab & Go Meals Update CLLD Grab and Go meals have resumed and will continue to be available through December 31st. If you are in need of assistance, please contact the CLLD office at 718.517.7445. Individuals who have not yet received a meal delivery from the Department for the Aging must call 311 to enroll. WELLNESS Virtual Yoga Class Sundays, 11am-12:15pm Join us for a new virtual yoga class, open to all JCC and CLLD members! The class will meet weekly on Zoom and will include deep relaxation, breathing exercises, and meditation along with the physical practice of yoga. In addition to a yoga mat, we recommend that you also have 2 blankets, a pillow, a strap, and a yoga block or thick book. A Virtual Tour of the Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum Tuesday, December 15, 7pm Join us for a virtual tour of the Northern Transylvania Holocaust Memorial Museum. Opened in 2005, the museum is an essential hub for Holocaust education in the region. Its centerpiece is an abandoned—now restored—synagogue originally built in 1876. The tour is sponsored by the Staten Island Holocaust Center in partnership with Congregation B'Nai Jeshurun. The event is free, but we welcome any donations that will help us plan future programs, including enriching Arts & Culture lectures and Holocaust education events like this one. In this play, a small-town radio station, W.O.R.K, is signing off the air after 50 years. This time, Dr. Wagner is back for a 5-part Jewish film series, where she'll explore representations of the Jewish experience on screen from early silent films to today, from Hollywood to Israel. Partial scholarships are open to students entering grades 5-12 who have some prior training on their instrument. Our Harmony Club scholarship program is open to highly motivated students in grades 9-12. “Harmony Club” students will take free private lessons and ensemble classes. Students will also participate in master classes, and solo and group recitals. This program is made possible through a grant from UJA-Federation of New York. Alley-Oop to Aliyah: African American Hoopsters in the Holy Land Tuesday, December 8, 7pm Join David A. Goldstein for a discussion of his book, Alley-Oop to Aliyah: African American Hoopsters in the Holy Land. Alley-Oop to Aliyah is the first book to provide an in-depth exploration and analysis of the experiences of African American basketball players in Israel from the 1970s till today. The book not only deals with basketball and its impact on Israel, but it delves into emotion-laden issues of race, religion, identity, and politics, primarily through the eyes of the players themselves.
