In this online course, we will explore representations of the Jewish experience on screen from early silent films to today, from Hollywood to Israel. In Part 4 of our series, we'll be discussing Heroes and Schlemiels: Jewish Masculinity on Screen. Learn more about the lecture topics & register here. - COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout: What Staten Islanders Need to Know Monday, February 1, 10:30am We are pleased to partner with the Staten Island Not for Profit Association, Staten Island Community Organizations Active in Disaster, and other local agencies to present a virtual town hall focused on the COVID-19 vaccine. The event will address vaccine distribution and rollout plans in Staten Island, as well as myths and other useful information. They're clearing up common misconceptions and questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, and encouraging everyone who is eligible to get vaccinated when it becomes available to them. - COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility Please be aware that vaccines are extremely limited in New York City at the moment. There are currently no new first dose appointments due to supply issues. Our staff is compiling an updated list of vaccine distribution sites around the Staten Island community. If you or someone you know is eligible for a vaccine but having trouble finding an appointment, email acohen@sijcc.com to be added to an email list and receive updates about new sites as they pop up. To find out if you're eligible for the vaccine at this stage, you can also fill out this screener. - CLLD Grab & Go Meals Update We would like to thank the Von Agency for sponsoring our initiative to continue feeding seniors through the end of January. Beginning next week, February 1, Grab-and-Go meal distribution will be paused indefinitely due to lack of funding.* We hope to bring back this service in the near future. Partial scholarships are open to students entering grades 5-12 who have some prior training on their instrument. Our Harmony Club scholarship program is open to highly motivated students in grades 9-12. “Harmony Club” students will take free private lessons and ensemble classes. Students will also participate in master classes, and solo and group recitals. This program is made possible through a grant from UJA-Federation of New York. A play about the transformative power of forgiveness and how it impacts our ability to move beyond the trauma of the past. Jewish Virtual Mission to Washington Monday, February 1 - Tuesday, February 2 The Jewish Federations of North America invite you to join the first-ever National Jewish Virtual Mission to Washington. This is an opportunity for communities across the United States to join together virtually with political leaders and policymakers from both sides of the aisle, to advocate for the future of the Jewish community. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about and advocate for laws that fight antisemitism, ensure a strong U.S.-Israel relationship and provide government resources to keep Jewish institutions flourishing. The Kabbalah of The Beatles Thursday, February 11, 7:30pm Rock Historian, Seth Rogovoy, will explore the secret Jewish history of the Beatles with Boston University music professor Jeremy Yudkin, who grew up in North London during the height of Beatlemania. John Lennon once said, “Show business is an extension of the Jewish religion.” While the four members of The Beatles did not themselves have any Jewish lineage, the circle of personal and professional colleagues surrounding them was heavily Jewish, from their manager, Brian Epstein, to filmmaker Richard Lester to their hairdresser, Leslie Cavendish.
