This multi-stringed and multi-pedaled instrument has a connection with 20th century American comedy. What instrument is it and what comedian famously played it? The harp became associated with American comedy when it was played Harpo Marx. Born Adolph Marx, he later changed his name to Arthur and is best known by his stage name, Harpo. While Harpo was the only non-speaking member of the Marx Brothers comedy team, his harp-playing became an iconic sound in the many films they made together. Watch Harpo play “Guardian Angels,” an original composition, here. Harps were used in orchestras that performed the first Italian operas. They were later ignored or used sparingly by such musical giants as Bach and Handel. Later, they were employed to great effect by such Romantic–era composers as Berlioz, List, and Wagner as well as Debussy and others of his Impressionist school. With as many as forty-seven strings and seven pedals, the modern orchestral harp can be a challenge to keep in proper celestial voice, something that might have prompted the testy comment attributed to Igor Stravinsky: “Harpists spend 90 percent of their lives tuning their harps and 10 percent playing out of tune.” - A Special Performance of Baby Beluga The New York Philharmonic Orchestra presents Young People's Concerts Play!
