One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, this Founding Father is also widely acknowledged as the first successful poet-composer of the United States of America. Who was he? He was Francis Hopkinson (1737-1791)! In addition to his multiple roles in the founding and early government of the United States, Hopkinson was a lawyer, inventor, artist, essayist, scholar, graduate of the University of Pennsylvania’s first class (1757)—and an organist, psalmist, and harpsichordist. Hopkinson is also credited as America’s first poet-composer, and his song “My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free” (1759) is regarded as the earliest surviving American secular composition. Hopkinson celebrated the crucial alliance between France and United States by composing what musicologist Oscar Sonneck termed a “dramatic allegorical cantata,” “The Temple of Minerva” (1781). He also directed the cantata’s premiere performance before an audience that included George Washington and other notables. In 1788, Hopkinson published the musical volume Seven Songs and wrote in its dedication, “I cannot, I believe, be refused the Credit of being the first Native of the United States who has produced a Musical Composition.” - A Tribute to the American Spirit Saturday, July 4, 4pm Join the U.S. Air Force Band, Washington Performing Arts and special guest artists Joshua Bell, Soloman Howard, and Larisa Martinez for a musical tribute to the American Spirit in honor of the 4th of July! This year, that number has grown as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19. Here’s the story of a family directly affected by the COVID-19 crisis that we were able to help: We were able to assist a family of four that needed financial assistance. Both parents are self-employed and unable to work due to the pandemic. They receive SNAP food benefits, but it isn't enough to cover all of their food bills. We were able to get them supplemental food from the JCC Kosher Food Pantry and referred them to a financial counselor for help with their debt. Donate to our Families in Need campaign here to help families like this one.
