What major symphonic work was born during the early days of the terrible 1941-1944 German siege of Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Russia, and became a wartime symbol of Allied resistance to Nazi Germany? The Seventh Symphony (Leningrad) by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975). Born in St. Petersburg before the Communist revolution, Shostakovich was in the city of his birth (which Soviets had renamed Leningrad) when German armed forces began their brutal 900-day siege, which choked off access to Leningrad so successfully that more than 600,000 of its residents and defenders starved to death before it was over. Acting as a firefighter after German shells began to rain down, Shostakovich spent some of his off-duty hours beginning work on the Seventh Symphony; he finished it in late December 1941, after escaping from the beleaguered city. Dedicated to “the ordinary Soviet citizens who have become the heroes of the present war,” this seventy-three-minute musical description of the horrors of the siege premiered in Moscow on March 1, 1942, was first performed in London that June, and debuted in the United States in July. - Compose Your Own Music Are you the next great composer? This year, that number will grow as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19.
