Summer Camp Recap Friday marked the last day of our summer camp season. In a year filled with so much uncertainty, we were so happy to be able to provide our camp families with the safe, nurturing, and fun experience they expect from us. Join us on September 3 for a conversation between Bettina Elias Siegel, author of Kid Food: The Challenge of Feeding Children in a Highly Processed World, and Zibby Owens, host of the acclaimed podcast Moms Don't Have Time to Read Books! We hope to see you there virtually! Tickets are $5 and can be purchased here. - U.S. Census 2020 Have you filled out the census yet? If not, now is the time to do it! The deadline is September 30th, and it is vital that we are ALL counted to secure funding for housing, transportation, schools, and other services we rely on. It takes less than 10 minutes and is confidential. You can fill it out by mail, online here, or by calling 844.330.2020. Health Meets Play Street Fair Thursday, September 3, 12pm-4pm The Staten Island Partnership for Community Wellness invites you to an upcoming health fair. The fair will feature free yoga, activities for children, therapeutic art, free COVID testing, blood pressure testing, voter registration, and more. The fair will take place on Henderson Avenue, between Alaska Street and Broadway. Maccabi USA Book Club: Alley-Oop to Aliyah: African American Hoopsters in the Holy Land Thursday, September 3, 1pm The Maccabi USA Book Club will be reading David A. Goldstein's Alley-Oop to Aliyah: African American Hoopsters in the Holy Land, which chronicles the more than 800 African American professional basketball players who have traveled to Israel to play the game they love over the past 4 decades. The club will be joined by the author for a discussion of these players' lives in Israel! Register here. Register here What Can Freedom Look Like Today? Monday, September 14, 6pm Join UJA for a virtual conversation with Soviet-Israeli human rights activist Natan Sharansky and historian Gil Troy about their new book, Never Alone: Prison, Politics, and My People. Never Alone shows how Sharansky’s years in prison prepared him for a very public life after his release. As an Israeli politician and the head of the Jewish Agency, Sharansky brought extraordinary moral clarity and uncompromising, often uncomfortable, honesty. The book is suffused with reflections from his time as a political prisoner, from his seat at the table as history unfolded in Israel and the Middle East, along with his passionate efforts to unite the Jewish people. Emergency Children's Help Organization (ECHO)- Raffle Fundraiser Friday, October 23 Our friends at ECHO are big supporters of our Sunrise Day Camp! If you'd like to support ECHO, purchase a ticket for their upcoming raffle. Enter to win a 2021 Mercedes-Benz C300 Convertible or $50,000 cash prize. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased here. The winner will be chosen on October 23. - Every year, the JCC serves over 6,000 people in crisis. This year, that number will grow as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19. Without the help of the JCC, many people would not have food, legal services, health insurance, mental health services, and other critical services.
