An orchestra conductor and self-taught composer, he wrote his first symphony at age sixteen and later founded Mexico’s Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional. Who was he? Carlos Chavez (1899-1978). Born near Mexico City, Chavez learned piano from his brother and taught himself composition by analyzing the European masters and creating piano arrangements of Mexican songs. By age sixteen he had written his first symphony; at age twenty-two he composed the Aztec-based ballet El fuego nuevo. Chavez was a musical citizen of the world, traveling, studying, and bringing to his country the work of contemporaries such as Igor Stravinsky and Erik Satie while helping to shape, with fellow artists such as Diego Rivera, a nationalist and progressive public art. After organizing the Orquesta Sinfonica in 1928, he served as its principal conductor until 1949, commissioning and performing many modern works. Chavez’s own compositions—including seven symphonies, ballets, the Soli (1933-1966) for small wind groups, and the popular Toccata for percussion (1942)—show the breadth of modern and ancient influences on his work as well as his talents as a colorist and rhythmist. - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here!
