- Music Trivia Challenge Tuesday's J at Home asked...This leader of a jazz orchestra commissioned, and in 1924 debuted, a composition from a fellow American that is now a standard on a classical playlist. Who was the orchestra leader, what was the composition, and who was the composer? In 1924, the orchestra led by “King of Jazz” Paul Whiteman (1890-1967) premiered “Rhapsody in Blue” by George Gershwin (1898-1937). When 25 year old George Gershwin sat down at the piano on the stage at New York City’s Aeolian Hall on February 12, 1924, to play his new Whiteman-commissioned rhapsody, he was a Tin Pan Alley and Broadway composer of limited renown. “Rhapsody in Blue” made him famous. Gershwin went on to write some of the great American classical works, including Concert in F and the folk opera Porgy and Bess. Listen to Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra perform this great American classic, with composer George Gershwin on the piano! - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here!
