To Our Members and Friends:
In these uncertain times, we’d like to do what we can to bring some stability, distraction, and positivity back into your lives. Our staff is working hard to develop creative and innovative ways to bring the programs you love right into your own homes. Throughout the weeks ahead, expect emails from us with a curated collection of activities, tips, and more—from fitness videos and meditation techniques to keep your mind and body strong, to arts and culture explorations, to fun and educational activities for kids and, yes, even Netflix recommendations. I speak for all of our staff members when I say that we miss running our programs just as much as you miss participating in them. We value the classes we teach, the relationships we’ve formed with members of our community and, above all, the privilege of serving you with programs that nurture your minds, bodies, and spirits. While nothing can truly replicate the community we’ve built over these 90 years, we hope that until it’s safe for us to all be together again, we can continue to serve you as a virtual community! Stay well, stay positive, and stay tuned for more! -Orit Lender, Deputy Executive Director WELLNESS Washing our hands and practicing social distancing are important parts of staying well right now…but we also need to take care of our bodies and minds! Stationary No-Dribble Basketball Drills You can improve your ball handling inside without dribbling the ball. Whip the ball around your waist in a full-circle, going right, then left, then back-and-forth after each circle. Do figure 8s, taking the ball with your right hand and handing it through your legs to your left hand. Bring the ball around with the left hand and put it through your legs to your right hand. Go as fast as you can without letting the ball drop. MUSIC During this stressful time, music can help us cope and lift our spirits. Music Together of Staten Island is holding several live feeds for parents and their young children, which you can check out on Facebook! ARTS AND CULTURE There’s so much to discover, right at our fingertips, thanks to technology! Now, we can go to the opera without ever leaving the comfort of our homes. La Boheme Opera was composed by Giacomo Puccini and shows the Bohemian lifestyle of a poor seamstress and her artist friends. Watch online here! KIDS AND FAMILIES In times like these, it is important to make sure that our children feel stable and secure. This includes keeping their schedules consistent, and giving them activities that will continue to shape their minds. This article includes activities for children from Pre-K to 6th grade and beyond, and is a great way to make sure that your child has fun while learning!
