IN THE NEWS
We are grateful to local developers David Berman and Murray Berman for their generous donation of meals, flowers, and candy to JCC program participants and staff. Among the recipients of these donations were families who participate in our Cornerstone Community Center Programs, Holocaust survivors from our Café Europa program, and JCC staff members doing essential work during the crisis. The father and son purchased the items from their tenants, who are struggling due to the crisis. The goal of the donation was to benefit the JCC while also helping small businesses on Staten Island during this difficult economic time.Read more about the Bermans' donation here. - We recently checked in with a few of our Music Institute students. This year, that number has grown as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19. Here’s the story of a family directly affected by the COVID-19 crisis that we were able to help: Recently, we were contacted by a couple with three teenage and adult children living at home. The father was between jobs when the pandemic hit, and the mother can no longer work due to a disability. To help them through this tough financial situation, we were able to provide them with food from our Kosher Food Pantry and are helping them apply for SNAP benefits (food stamps). Our staff is also helping them get medical insurance. In addition, we referred them to legal and financial counseling. Our social services staff is grateful to be able to help this family navigate this difficult time. Donate to our Families in Need campaign here to help families like this one.
