- Music Trivia Challenge This week's trivia challenge asked... In the mid-twentieth century, renowned classical musician E. Power Biggs played weekly recitals that were broadcast on the radio. What instrument did he play, and what Baroque composer did he especially honor each year? A celebrated organist, E. Power Biggs (1906-1977) honored Johann Sebastian Bach by playing at the annual Bethlehem Bach Festival in Pennsylvania. Trained at the Royal Academy of Music in London, Biggs began his performing career by giving recitals in English cathedrals. After emigrating to the United States in 1930, he served as organist of Christ Church Cambridge and later as music director of Harvard Church. At the same time, he made tours of Europe while scouring Continental churches for instruments similar to those used by the Baroque masters. (Biggs forever balked at playing electronic organs, whose tone he considered but a coarse approximation of the “classic” organ sound.) He became widely known in the 1940s and 1950s for weekly recitals that were broadcast on CBS radio. His many recordings include selections of the work of African American composer Scott Joplin, which Biggs played on the pedal harpsichord, a harpsichord with an organ–type pedal board. - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here!
