What was the ballet? The Rite of Spring (Le Sacre du printemps). When this ballet premiered at the Theatre de Champs-Elysees in Paris on May 29, 1913, the audience met the discomfiting story of pagan sacrifice—told via Vaslav Nijinsky’s strange choreography and Igor Stravinsky’s innovative music—with hisses and catcalls. Though jarring to early 20th century musical sensibilities, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring has since been established as one of the century’s musical masterworks, a reflection of the composer’s belief that “we have a duty to music, namely to invent it.” - Virtual Instrumental Lessons Sign up for lessons here!
