For more than 50 years, the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute has helped Staten Islanders discover the joy of music.

About the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute

Whether you’re picking up an instrument for the first time, developing your voice, or advancing years of musical study, our experienced faculty provide personalized instruction in a welcoming and supportive environment. Students of all ages are encouraged to grow at their own pace while building confidence, discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

The Music Institute is proud to be the only member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education on Staten Island. Our faculty are active professional musicians and dedicated educators who bring both expertise and passion to every lesson.

Music has the power to inspire, connect, and enrich our lives. We are proud to help students of every age find their voice through music.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are available for the following instruments and may be 30, 45 or 60 minutes:

    No experience? No problem. Musicians of all levels play multi-part music together on one of the easiest instruments to pick up — compatible instruments and singers welcome too.

    Tell your story through rhythm.

    This hands-on class introduces African and Caribbean hand-drumming techniques — the rhythmic roots of pop music.

  • Jazz Piano Improvisation

    This adult class (for students comfortable with easy sonatinas) explores harmonic structure, chords, and form across styles and keys. Taught by Lena Khaymovich.

Youth Music Programs

At the JCC, a love of music starts at a young age. We offer music classes and private lessons for children of all ages and skill levels.

Music Faculty

Faculty members of the Dorothy Delson Kuhn Music Institute are active in the cultural life of the community. They are highly qualified teachers in Staten Island schools and colleges and they are performers and conductors for ensembles and orchestras locally and throughout the New York City area.
