Thank you very much for inviting me to your THRIVE Expo, Women Empowered Event. And of course to JCC, the committee and all the sponsors of the event. It was indeed a wonderful and great opportunity for me to be able to learn from the experts and professionals in the field with the workshop presentations. It was great to network with the men and women who are knowledgeable, eager and willing to share, help and support us with our career. It was a very fruitful and amazing day. What I learned gave me the encouragement to move forward and be confident of myself. The wonderful swag bag was amazing. Indeed the refreshments you provided sustained us throughout the day. I couldn’t thank you all in the committee enough for all the hard work you showered us. I will forever treasure everything I learned in this EXPO. It was a very fulfilling day. Thank you again and forever grateful for sharing all your expertise.
I just wanted to follow up with you regarding Sunday's THRIVE Expo. I have attended job fairs at this JCC in the past from which I received employment. This fair was especially unique because the presenters were connected to the attendees. They showed a dedicated interest and provided expert advice that was gravely needed. Each presenter appeared sincere and excited to share their assistance. The take away bag was also filled with necessary items to re-enter the workforce, a lovely surprise.
Overall, each segment of the fair was well organized, specifically designed to boost the participants into feeling good about themselves. It is the most productive day I've had in the many months of my employment search. The benefits abounded connections, real-time valuable information regarding resume writing, LinkedIn profiling, and heart felt career advancement advice. Pretty much all facets of employment industries were represented, providing a range of employment choice. Outstanding job!
I am actually overwhelmed with pertinent information for my employment search.

In the fall, the Joan & Alan Bernikow JCC of Staten Island launched Career Connections, a new initiative to help community members start and advance their careers. Career Connections offers a range of free services to both job-seekers and those looking to advance within their current careers. JCC staff members perform a comprehensive assessment of clients’ needs and guide them to trainings, workshops, job fairs, and more.
Recognizing that a promising prospective employee may have the capabilities to do a job well, but may lack the polish to get their foot in the door, the JCC offers a series of soft skills workshops. These free seminars bring in career services professionals to offer insights about resume and cover letter writing, workplace attire, business etiquette, interview success, and more. Additionally, the JCC’s Career Connections offers a variety of opportunities for job-specific training. Through a recent partnership with Per Scholas, a leading provider of technical training, the JCC brought an IT certification course to Staten Island. Learners attend the 12-week course at the Bernikow JCC, where they participate in livestreamed lessons and receive guidance from an on-site instructional assistant. |
The JCC has also hosted several OSHA training courses, with plans to offer additional programs in the future. Located at the Gerard Carter Center, these courses enable workers to get the certifications they need to work safely and advance their careers. Career Connections is the latest phase in the JCC’s pandemic recovery efforts. Orit Lender, CEO of the JCC, said, “As the pandemic has evolved, our organization has continued to be there for the community every step of the way. We are proud to help people find meaningful work and reach their full potential.”
Part of the JCC’s robust social services offerings, Career Connections also provides clients with access to other critical resources, such as benefits screenings and enrollment, legal and financial counseling, food pantry access, and more. While still a relatively new program, Career Connections is already making a difference in the Staten Island community and beyond.
Marcus, a Bronx resident, signed up for several OSHA classes offered by the JCC after learning about the program from a friend. Marcus spent a year living in a homeless shelter during a difficult period in his life. Now, several years after finding a job in construction and leaving the shelter, he is in the process of creating his own construction company. The JCC’s OSHA trainings have been instrumental in helping him get his company off the ground. When asked what advice he would give to someone else looking to forge a new path, Marcus encouraged others to take advantage of the JCC’s Career Connections programs. “It was a perfect opportunity and anybody who gets this opportunity should do the same.”
