Community Afterschool Programs

Picture
The JCC offers Beacon Programs at I.S. 49 and Tottenville High School and a COMPASS Program at P.S. 65. All of these after school programs are free and funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD).

JCC Beacon Programs
The JCC Beacon program serves the community on the North and South Shores of Staten Island. The after school program for middle school and high school students offers a wide variety of essential services to school-age children as well as their parents and the community. The mission of the Beacon program is to provide activities that are not generally available during the school day. The Beacon program also works closely with each principal to support their ongoing academic needs. Regularly scheduled after school, evening, Saturday, and summer camp programs include academic help (STEM based), social services, recreational, leadership development, nutritional enhancements, music, dance, art, and drama. There is a registration process for enrollment into the JCC Beacon programs with applications available at each site. The JCC Beacon Program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), a NYC agency.

COMPASS Program at P.S. 65
The JCC COMPASS program provides after school programming for elementary aged children in the north shore area. Similar to the JCC Beacon program, the program complements the school day by offering academics, socialization, recreation, and the arts. Parents and the surrounding community are also provided with opportunities to support the efforts of the program by civic engagement events that bring the community together. To enroll in the COMPASS program, applications can be submitted to the COMPASS office at PS 65. The JCC COMPASS program is funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD), a NYC agency.

COMPASS EXPLORE at p.s. 65
Compass Explore is an educational theatre program, “Building Self-Esteem”, funded by NYC Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) and housed in PS65. This innovative theatrical journey celebrates cultural diversity for self-esteem development and personal exploration. Activities are guided by the NYS Learning Standards for the Arts and connected to PS65’s ELA/SS curriculum maps. This extraordinary curriculum consists of classroom-based activities and 2 theatre performances in which students write, build sets, design costumes, and perform for multiple audiences.  This program meets after school on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the academic year.
