IN THE NEWS
Staying Connected

During these difficult times, we take great comfort and joy in knowing that our JCC is more connected than ever before. In addition to bringing our members together virtually, our amazing programs are even reaching new participants around the country and globe! In fact, at our most recent SAJE film lecture series, half of our participants were tuning in from across the pond in the UK! We were so happy to have them with us and to share what a special community our JCC of Staten Island is. If you're just joining us, we'd like to extend a warm welcome to you! Feel free to let us know where on the map you're "visiting" us from by sending us an email. Here's to staying connected!

Music Trivia Challenge
This week's trivia challenge asked... In 1945, Aaron Copland was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. Which of his ballet scores earned him that award, and where did the ballet premiere? Aaron Copland (American, 1900-1990) received the Pulitzer Prize for Appalachian Spring, a ballet commissioned by the Library of Congress (Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation) and first performed at the Library on October 30, 1944. Copland received three different scripts from the ballet’s choreographer, dance great Martha Graham, before beginning what he initially titled “Ballet for Martha.” (Graham gave the ballet its final title.) He drew on the traditional Shaker composition “Simple Gifts” in composing the evocative music for Appalachian Spring. Rearranged as an orchestral suite, it is now often performed by symphony orchestras around the world- along with Copland’s other ballet music, including Billy the Kid and Rodeo. His other works range from symphonic and chamber music to film scores. A conductor, pianist, and lecturer as well as one of America’s great classical composers, Copland was a tireless champion of explication of modern music to the public. His books include What to Listen For in Music and Our New Music.

Every year, the JCC serves over 6,000 people in crisis. This year, that number will grow as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19. IN THE NEWS
Campers Donate Food to Families in Need

One of the highlights of our camp season is our annual Day of Caring and Sharing! On this special day, campers come together and do something good for those in need, celebrating the positive impact we can all have in our community. This year, in honor of the Day of Caring and Sharing, our campers collected 300 pounds of food to donate to the JCC's Kosher Food Pantry and to Project Hospitality.
Here's a picture of our staff and volunteers bringing the food to the JCC from camp. This food donation will help us serve over 3000 people this month who have been impacted by COVID-19 (that's more than five times the amount of people we usually serve). We are so proud of our campers!
If you'd like to help out, donate to our Families in Need campaign here.

Music Trivia Challenge
What was the first opera by an African American composer to be performed by a major opera company? Who was the composer, and who wrote the libretto?

The Troubled Island by William Grant Still (1895-1978), with a libretto by Langston Hughes and Verna Arvey, was performed by the New York City Opera in 1949.

Completed a decade earlier, this three-act opera was both a stunning success and a disappointing failure. Set on the isle of Haiti in 1791, it depicts the rise and fall of revolutionary leader Jean-Jacques Dessalines, who was assassinated after crowning himself emperor of the newly independent nation. On opening night, the audience gave the opera twenty-two curtain calls, but many critics were not so kind; their less-than-glowing reviews—some of which reflected the prevailing racial prejudice—contributed to the short three-show run. William Grant Still remained undaunted. Deeply influenced by the Harlem Renaissance, the Mississippi-born, Oberlin–trained instrumentalist-arranger-composer completed more than 150 musical compositions during his lifetime, including nine operas and five symphonies, chamber music, ballets, and works for piano, voice, band, and chorus.

Music Trivia Challenge
This week's music trivia asked... During World War II, Leonard Bernstein wrote the music for a wildly successful ballet on a contemporary theme that inspired a successful Broadway musical and, later, a film. What was the name of the ballet, and what was the name of the musical and film inspired by it?

In 1944, Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) collaborated with choreographer Jerome Robbins on the ballet Fancy Free, the dance–adventure of three US sailors on shore leave in New York City. This popular work was expanded the into the Broadway musical On the Town, for which Betty Comden and Adolph Green wrote the libretto and lyrics. Five years, later Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Jules Munshin starred in a lively film adaptation of the Broadway musical. Watch the film's opening number here!

A renowned conductor, pianist, author, and lecturer as well as one of America’s foremost 20th century composers, Bernstein was the first great musical communicator in the age of television and created unprecedented new audiences for many kinds of music. A number of Bernstein’s symphonic, choral, and instrumental compositions have entered the modern repertoire—though he may be best remembered for his score for the groundbreaking musical West Side Story (1957).

Every year, the JCC serves over 6,000 people in crisis. This year, that number will grow as Staten Islanders experience hardships related to COVID-19. Without the help of the JCC, many people would not have food, legal services, health insurance, mental health services, and other critical services. We want to be able to continue to provide these services to anyone who needs them, but we need your help.

IN THE NEWS
NORC Progress Update

Last fall, we announced our Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC), which serves the community of Stapleton/Rosebank. One of our primary goals for the NORC's first year was to conduct a community needs assessment that would help us better serve this community going forward. You can also read the full report here. If you would like more information about the program, contact Amelia Winter at AWinter@sijcc.com or 718.475.5238.
