Per Scholas, a professional training organization, already has a presence in the other boroughs, but will begin free offering courses on Staten Island for the first time at our JCC this fall. Florence's late husband Lew was the JCC President from 1974-1976. The couple was influential in obtaining the property that now houses the Joan & Alan Bernikow Building. In fact, it was Florence who insisted that the new building's façade be made of beautiful Jerusalem Stone. Members of our Board remember her for her kindness and hospitality as she welcomed them into the JCC family. The family has requested that any donations in honor of Florence be made to the JCC. Last year, the enacted budget included $4 million for the Elie Wiesel Holocaust Survivors Initiative; this year, we are advocating that this funding be restored at $4 million.
