Remembering Joy Guttenplan We recently unveiled a statue in our ECE playground in memory of Joy Guttenplan, who passed away last year. Joy was a teacher in our Early Childhood Education Department for over 30 years. In her time with us, she touched and shaped thousands of lives. Her legacy continues on through her son, Lee Guttenplan, a longtime JCC employee who currently serves as our Chief Operating Officer. Congratulations, Gail Castellano! Former JCC Board President Gail Castellano was recently selected as one of the Top 31 Most Impactful Private Sector Business Leaders on Staten Island by the SIEDC. In addition to her work as the Senior Vice President and Regional Executive of Richmond County Savings Bank, Gail continues to devote her time to meaningful causes, including those here at the JCC. She currently serves on the JCC's Board of Directors and is the co-chair of the Lucille & Jay Chazanoff Sunrise Day Camp Advisory Committee. Congratulations, Gail, on this well-deserved honor! Celebrating Women's History Month Students in our Learning Bridges and Cornerstone after school programs have been working on special projects to celebrate Women's History Month! They recently made DNA strands out of candy in honor of Rosalind Franklin, an unsung pioneer of science who contributed to the discovery of DNA's structure. Grab & Go Meals for Seniors Grab-and-Go meal service for Seniors in Need have resumed and will continue through March 24th. Distribution will take place Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 11am. Due to our limited funding, we can only provide 2 meals per person. Since we have fewer meals to give away, we ask that only those in need take part in this food distribution. We have been getting hundreds of requests for help finding vaccine appointments. We will continue to work with our partners in government to help eligible people find appointments. Scholarship Opportunities We have several scholarship opportunities available for deserving music students! Partial scholarships are open to students entering grades 5-12 who have some prior training on their instrument. Our Harmony Club scholarship program is open to highly motivated students in grades 9-12. “Harmony Club” students will take free private lessons and ensemble classes. Students will also participate in master classes, and solo and group recitals. This program is made possible through a grant from UJA-Federation of New York. The Stories We Carry featuring Josh Gad Monday, March 22, 6pm Josh Gad’s voice may sound familiar -- he’s best known for his role as Olaf from Frozen -- and now the actor is using his voice to share reflections as the grandson of two Holocaust survivors.
