In Their Own Words: Latif Jiji Thursday, May 20, 6pm Join us to hear a different story of survival from Latif Jiji, an Iraqi Jew who will share the experience of Jews in Iraq during the time of the Holocaust. He’ll speak about how his family, and the larger Iraqi Jewish community, was impacted by the Farhud (the pogrom against the Jewish community of Baghdad in June of 1941). He’ll also discuss the pillage of Jewish-owned stores in Basra, the exiling of the Jews from Iraq, and the effects of Nazi influence on the community who had called Iraq home for millennia. We Refuse to Be Enemies: An Interfaith Conversation with Writers Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby Thursday, June 10, 8pm We Refuse to Be Enemies is a manifesto by two American citizens, a Muslim woman and Jewish man, concerned with the rise of intolerance and bigotry in our country. Together, Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby have spent decades doing interfaith work and nurturing cooperation among communities. Richmond cemetery to help clean up and care for the dead. The Hebrew Free Burial Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the principle that every Jewish person is entitled to a Jewish Burial no matter their financial circumstances. Since 1888, they have arranged burials for nearly 60,000 Jewish people. TODAY: Vaccine Hesitation & Education with Dr. Daniel Kalla, 8pm Vaccines are a major tool to help us end the COVID pandemic, yet despite the scientific and medical communities consistently affirming their safety and effectiveness, many people are against them. At the heart of this problem is fear and misinformation, some of it spread maliciously and some of it spread in good faith with negative outcomes. As the head of ER at Vancouver’s St. Paul’s Hospital, Dr. Daniel Kalla has been fighting on the front lines and has become one of Canada’s go-to pandemic experts. He is also a vocal champion for the safety and importance of vaccination, both in the media and within his hospital.
