PaleyImpact: Media's Role in Identifying, Explaining, and Combating Antisemitism Yesterday, the Paley Center for Media hosted a panel discussion to address the rise in antisemitism and discuss how to inform, educate, and make an impact on this enduring prejudice. Wagner College Holocaust Center 5th Annual Holocaust Art & Poetry Contest DEADLINE: May 25 During the Nazi rise to power and the Holocaust, Jews and others faced tremendous persecution and hatred. How did they confront difficulties and adversity? What about the Holocaust survivor's diaries, testimony or experiences inspire you with their courage? How do their tragedies help us to better understand antisemitism and other forms of prejudice in our own times? Using poetry, art, prose or video, express what "the face of courage" means to you. Create a piece of art that reflects what moves you about their tragedy and strength and why it matters today. Artwork entries must be accompanied by a paragraph on the meaning of the piece. TODAY: In Their Own Words: Latif Jiji, 6pm Join us to hear a different story of survival from Latif Jiji, an Iraqi Jew who will share the experience of Jews in Iraq during the time of the Holocaust. He’ll speak about how his family, and the larger Iraqi Jewish community, was impacted by the Farhud (the pogrom against the Jewish community of Baghdad in June of 1941). Building Bridges Between Israel and the Diaspora Wednesday, May 26, 12pm Join UJA for an exclusive conversation with Minister of Diaspora Affairs, Omer Yankelevitch, the first haredi Orthodox woman to hold a Cabinet position in the Israeli government. As the minister of Diaspora affairs in Israel, Minister Yanekelevitch is responsible for managing the important and complicated relationship between the Jewish state and Jewish communities abroad. Minister Yankelevitch will be in dialogue with Dan Och to share her thoughts on the current political and security issues facing Israel today, and the critically important relationship between American Jewry and Israel. We Refuse to Be Enemies: An Interfaith Conversation with Writers Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby Thursday, June 10, 8pm We Refuse to Be Enemies is a manifesto by two American citizens, a Muslim woman and Jewish man, concerned with the rise of intolerance and bigotry in our country. Together, Sabeeha Rehman and Walter Ruby have spent decades doing interfaith work and nurturing cooperation among communities. Richmond cemetery to help clean up and care for the dead. The Hebrew Free Burial Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the principle that every Jewish person is entitled to a Jewish Burial no matter their financial circumstances. Since 1888, they have arranged burials for nearly 60,000 Jewish people.
